Grieving the woman I used to be

I keep trying to return to the woman I was before cancer, but she doesn't exist anymore. My body is different. My mind is different. Even the way I move and breathe has changed. Maybe what I need isn't to keep pushing forward or trying harder to feel like myself again. Maybe I need enough quiet to finally grieve the woman I was—and begin meeting the woman I am becoming.

Alive in me

I went into the forest unsure of what I was supposed to find there. What surfaced wasn't peace or joy or some beautiful revelation. It was anger. And instead of asking me to change it, the forest gave me somewhere to simply let it exist. I left lighter, grounded, and feeling welcomed exactly as I was—angry, tired, grieving, and human.

Head Down, Out the Door

I had every intention of finishing the workout. Then something shifted in the room, my nervous system sounded the alarm, and before I had time to think, I was putting away my weights and walking out the door. I spent the drive wondering why everything feels so loud right now. Maybe my feelings won’t always be this intense. Until then, I’m learning that leaving isn’t always weakness. Sometimes it’s the way my body knows how to keep me safe.

The things I don’t remember

After cancer, so much of what I went through feels strangely absent from my memory. At the same time, I feel like I’m learning how to move, feel, and live all over again. Somewhere in that beginning is a vision of a quieter version of me—one who loves the people around her deeply without carrying everything for them, and who finally understands that sometimes simply being with the people I love can be enough.

Only you would understand

Sometimes another person touches an old wound without ever knowing it’s there. I find myself wanting to understand him, comfort him, and somehow make things better—and slowly realizing how much that instinct is tangled up with my relationship with my dad. Maybe the hardest part of friendship is learning that I can care deeply about someone without understanding every part of them, fixing their pain, or making their healing my responsibility.

The shape of a life

Some days I can look at the stretch marks, scars, lumps, and bumps of my body and barely notice them. Other days, all it takes is a form-fitting dress to make them feel impossibly loud. After seven pregnancies, cancer, and a body that is still changing, I’m learning that maybe I don’t have to love what I see every single day to honor what this body has done for me.

You look good naked

It’s been almost a year since my mastectomy, and I’ve spent much of that time avoiding how I feel about my body. It saved my life, and I am grateful for it. But gratitude doesn’t erase grief. I’m still learning how to recognize the woman in the mirror—and how to make a body that doesn’t quite feel like mine feel like home again.

It breaks my heart…

Parenting gets complicated when holding a boundary means watching your child be unhappy. I know my job isn’t to protect my kids from every disappointment—but with my youngest, putting my foot down somehow feels so much harder. I’m learning that accountability doesn’t have to come from anger. Sometimes holding the line is an act of love.

Why The Back Inside Portion Of Your Knee Might Hurt (Especially If You’re A Runner)

Pain along the back and inside of the knee can be frustrating—especially when it starts interfering with running, squatting, stairs, or even sleep. But the knee doesn’t work in isolation. Ankle mobility, calf tension, hip stability, training load, and movement patterns can all influence what you feel at the knee. Understanding those connections can help you respond to pain with more than simply stretching harder or pushing through.

Are you holding your breath?

Stress doesn’t always feel like racing thoughts or overwhelm. Sometimes it looks like a clenched jaw, raised shoulders, or suddenly realizing you’ve been holding your breath. Learning to notice these quieter signals can give us a chance to respond before our bodies have to shout. And sometimes, that response can be as simple as one intentional breath.

Why Your Hip Might Hurt More at Night (And What To Do About It)

When the outside of your hip aches—especially at night—the instinct is often to stretch it harder or grab a foam roller. But sometimes the body isn’t asking for more flexibility. It’s asking for stability. Here’s what may be happening around the hip, and how controlled movement, strength, and support can help you approach that discomfort differently.

Feeling Heavy and Sluggish After Cancer Treatment

After cancer treatment, I’ve had days when my body feels heavy, sluggish, or just a little… stuck. I’m doing all the things I know support recovery, so what else might my body be asking for? I’ve been learning more about the lymphatic system—and experimenting with gentle tools like movement, breathing, and a vibration plate—to better understand what support can look like when pushing harder isn’t the answer.
